How much cheaper is supermarket diesel?

Why do diesel prices go up and down?

About a third of the pump price is the fuel itself. That part follows the world price of oil and the value of the pound. The rest is fuel duty, which is a fixed amount per litre, VAT at 20% on top of everything, and the retailer's own margin. When the oil price moves, pump prices usually follow within a few days. The CMA has found that prices go up faster than they come down. The history page shows the duty and VAT parts for every week since 2003.

Sources: prices reported by retailers to the UK Government's Fuel Finder service (Open Government Licence v3.0). Official weekly averages from DESNZ. Our average treats every forecourt the same, so it comes out a little higher than the DESNZ figure, which gives more weight to busy supermarket forecourts. Read how it works.
