Why this exists

Since February 2026, every forecourt in the country has had to publish its prices. Lots of sites put those prices on a map. A map tells you what a forecourt charges right now. It does not tell you if that is a good price, whether it went up yesterday, how your town compares with the next one, or whether to fill up now or wait. For that you need the history, and someone has to collect it. The Government feed only ever shows the current price, and the paid-for database that used to keep the history closed in 2024.

PumpIndex has saved every price change at every forecourt since the feed began. That is 1,099,536 changes so far. We turn them into charts for 8,270 forecourts, pages for 1,407 towns, league tables, a weekly report, a price timeline back to 2003 and postcode alerts.

Who makes it

Matthew Hodson

Editor and founder · Lincoln, UK

Matthew Hodson builds and edits PumpIndex and its sister open-data sites, OpenCrime (police-recorded crime for every neighbourhood) and GPScore (NHS data for every GP surgery), through Search Ventures Ltd. The three sites use the same list of towns and work the same way. They take the official data as published, keep the history that nobody else keeps, and explain what it means in plain English. Every guide and weekly report on this site is written and checked by the editor.

How the figures are made

Prices are exactly what retailers report to the Government's Fuel Finder service under the Motor Fuel Price (Open Data) Regulations 2025. We load every change and check that the price is realistic and the forecourt is where it says it is. Prices that fail the check are kept on file but never shown. Our averages count every forecourt the same, as long as it has reported in the last 30 days. That is why they come out a few pence above the official DESNZ figure, which gives more weight to busy forecourts. Every page says so. The full method is on how it works, and the sources and their licences are on data sources.

Independence and funding

No retailer, brand or trade body pays to be listed, ranked or removed, and none of them has any say over what appears. The site is paid for by clearly marked advertising and by selling the price history to fleets, researchers and journalists. Those customers see the same data as everyone else. We check prices but never change them. We never say a forecourt has broken the rules. An old price usually means a quiet week, not a breach. Our standards are set out in the editorial policy.

Corrections

If a price, address or opening time is wrong, tell us. We will check the source and fix it, normally within a working day. Because each price is the retailer's own report, the quickest fix for a wrong price is also to report it to Fuel Finder. We pick up the correction on the next load.

Data and reuse

Everything on the site comes from data published under the Open Government Licence v3.0. You can quote our league tables and weekly reports for free with a link to the page. If you need the full history or an API, get in touch.
